Rants

The rant we watched in class from the comedian/teacher was very inspiring! I loved how the guy used such emotion and strong words but performed his rant in a respectable fashion. I believe that rants are typically performed in an unstable fashion and therefore they end up being taken to such a level that they are not taken seriously. The way the comedian performed his rant he got across a lot of good information and he was taken seriously. I really liked how the rant was sticking up for teachers and making a very powerful point on how important and hard working they are. The difference between this rant and the rant performed by the UCLA girl is that this one was making a good point and was positive where as the girl's rant was very racist and disrespectful. The one thing that I really liked about the comedians rant was how not only was he sticking up for himself but he was also sticking up for a whole population, teachers. I really loved how the rant was performed in a comedic way, this way people really listen to it because it's entertaining but at the same time they are forming an opinion and learning from it. The only thing that I believe could have been changed about this rant was the fact that he started to stereotype lawyers in the performance and this added to the comedian factor but took away from his overall theme of staying away from stereotyping. I believe that when rants are performed in this fashion they are more likely to make a difference and get a valuable point across.

Paragraph Exercise

In Exit Through the Gift Shop, reclusive street artist Banksy tells the story of Thierry Guetta, a videographer who sets out to capture the world of street art.Banksy does not give interviews, so producer Jaimie D'Cruz joins NPR's Lynn Neary on his behalf. "Thierry," explains D'Cruz, "was obsessed by filming everything in his path." Guetta was related to a street artist, and through that connection he became embedded in the graffiti world. It's "a world populated almost exclusively by furtive men, working illegally and at night." Guetta became a well-known personality in the underground scene, "a world without any personalities," and served as a diarist for the movement. He parlayed his access, built on his reputation for trustworthiness, into meeting "the prize, which was the street artist Banksy — the uber-anonymous person in a world full of anonymous people."

The film, nominated for an Academy Award in the documentary category, has confused reviewers and moviegoers alike, who doubt its authenticity. The subjects Guetta cast his camera on believed he was using the footage for a documentary, but that may never have been the case. Rather, Guetta seemed to use the story as a cover to further access to a world he found exhilarating. Guetta began creating his own street art, under the pseudonym Mr. Brainwash. Through a series of unlikely events, Guetta becomes the subject — and a street artist, himself. Banksy found Guetta's story more intriguing than his own, so he took over the documentary and switched its focus — or so the story goes. Some believe Banksy invented Guetta's story, and that it's more of a creative movie than a documentary. D'Cruz dismisses the suspicion. "The truth is, the film is really a true story of something extraordinary that happened," he says. "We wouldn't be able to create something as extraordinary as the rise of Thierry Guetta ... We didn't have the intent, we didn't have the inclination to do that, to kind of stage a prank on the world.

Dove Commerical

The commercial is based off of several stages of altering the model into what they believe looks the best. It begins with the alteration of her eyebrows, makeup, skin complexion and makeup. It then begins transferring her hair from straight and flat to wavy and volumized. Once they have the make up and hair done they take their work to the computer. They next begin to alter her appearance by elongating her neck, making her eyes larger, and making her appear skinnier. The last stage is some more touch ups on the computer to make the models skin look flawless.

The different scenes show all the different stages. The first scene is to show what the original model looks like. You then are taken through several different scenes very hastily in order to see the transformation that is under way. The next scene is on the computer and shows all the touch ups they do to completely alter the model. The last scene is on the billboard, this gives you the true effect of how fake and made up the character is.

The beginning setting is in a room with a normal looking girl. The end setting is of a completely different girl on a billboard whom looks flawless and beautiful. This compares to the original setting because it goes from normal beauty to fake beauty, it shows how unrealistic perfection is and how made up our image of beauty has become.

The facial expressions of the girl in the film are pretty consistent through out. She basically keeps the same pout/frown on her face. The only difference is that in the beginning her sad appearance is a lot more prominent then it is at the end. She slowly through the altercation turns her frown and unhappiness to more of a pout and look of confidence.

I believe that this message is coming from the average every day people. "We" may not have  created the video but we are the ones who it influences. Everyday kids grow up striving to look like the girl on the magazine cover, but most of the time these girls are photo shopped and covered in layers of makeup. I think that this message is coming from Dove in order to show the world the truth of beauty and that we should all be happy with who we are because the so called "Hollywood" beauty is nothing but pounds of makeup and computer altercations.

Movie responce

Street art is illegal because it is destructive to private property. The people do not have the "go ahead" by the city or the building owners to draw over their property so that makes it illegal. Street art could be categorized as either graffiti or art, it can be seen as art because it is nice to look at and creative but it also can be considered graffiti because it is illegal and seen around the city.

I feel that Mr. Brainwash is not a true street artist because he did not go through the experiences that build up and make a true artist who they are. He only created things because he was taught by the best of the best. The only reason he made it big was because of the well known artists sticking up for him.

I feel that Banksy only takes over Guetta's film becuase Guetta did not know how to truely make a documentory. Banksy did this for a good cause, he wanted to show the true life of street art so I feel that he did it for the right reasons.

Banksy assumes production of the film and takes over as director becuase he feels that the true reason for street art needs to be shown. Banksy wanted to show the world of street art from those who do it. He wanted to show that it's not about the money or fame but about the common goal of getting an idea out.
I beleive that Banksy is a friend of Guetta because he was very intimate about keeping his identity a secret, but he trusted Guetta so he took him along with him and taught him everythign he knew.

The Disneyland debacle I beleive went a step too far for Banksy. I beleive that Banksy only wanted to do this stunt in rememberance of what happened on that day, but It caused a lot of trouble and could have been even worse if officials did not notice it right away.
Guetta is succesful in his art show because he pulls it off, has a lot of people show up and he makes a lot of money. In a sense this also makes him fail, because these art shows were never about the money to the other artists, but to Guetta it is only about the money.
I beleive that Mr. Brainwash's fans only became his fans because he came so highly reccomended by all the big names in street art. They beleive in the hype and what is big at the time. If they saw the documentary i think that they would understand that Mr. brainwash is not a true street artist and that they would stop buying a lot of his work.
I beleive that this is truely Banksy's film. I think it is called "Exit Through the Gift Shop" becuase at the end of the movie in Guetta's art show he is putting random prices on everything and trying to sell all his art just for the money. That's why his art show is considered a gift shop, the goal is to just sell and make profit.

I do not beleive the film was a hoax becuase it showed the true life of a street artist and it also showed the true evolution of Mr. brainwash. I beleive Banksy just wanted to show the truth of the street artist life but he also showed how Mr. brainwash turned the whole meaning of street art around for the wrong reasons. I thin kMr. brainwash did evolve over night because he only had ONE big show, and it was only big becuase of his high reccomendations from his friends.

Guetta's selling of art and making a lot of money gives the street art world a bad name. It makes it seem like to people and the media that street art is a joke and that it is all about the money and fame. When really street art was always about a passion and love that people had for what they were doing. They beleived that they had a real meaning to get out to the world, but Mr. Brainwash turned that meaning and idea around.

Movie Trouble Makers & Truth Tellers

Basicly every movie ever created has a trouble maker, truth teller story line. Every movie, even kid movies, has a good guy bad guy relationship. This relationship usually defines the movie to being what it is. The constant feud and butting of heads is what helps the story line keep viewers interested.

One recent series of books and movies that has this type of relationship is the Twilight saga. The Character of Edward is portrayed in the movie as being the good guy, or truth teller. The character of Jacob is portrayed as being the trouble maker, or bad guy. This relationship interests people in the film because it creates tension. It also keeps the viewer interested because they are always wondering who will win in the end, the truth teller or the troublemaker. The Truth teller, Edward, has his image is built off of the fact that he is a nice honesty guy who only wants the best for people. The reason the trouble maker, Jacob, is portrayed as the trouble maker is because he is trying to steal over Edwards girlfriend Bella. He tends to to to accomplish this by doing some mean and unfair things.

Another movie that uses the relationship of truth telling and trouble makers is the Lion King. In this movie Scar is viewed as the trouble maker who will do what ever it takes to become the King. The truth teller is portrayed by Simba's father whom is the king and is very wise and honest. Once he is killed the truth telling role is passed over to Simba.

In the movie Step Brothers, the trouble maker role is played by the older brother and the truth tellers are played by the two "step brothers". The trouble maker is viewed as the bad guy because he constantly is picking on the two other brothers and making their lives harder. He comes off as cocky, aarogont and just very unlikable. The two other brothers are seen as the truth tellers because they are always honest, saying how they feel even if it's not always the right thing to say. They never mean any harm they are always just having innocent fun. This movie uses a comic way of showing the realtionship of truth telling and trouble making.

These three examples show how this common relationship of truth teller and trouble maker has been used in every type of film from romance to Disney to comedy. This basic idea is what helps movies have a story line, it also gives people a character to like and to hate.

There are many important people in the world who have made huge strides politically, medically or even socially. Choosing only one person to write a profile on will be  a difficult process of narrowing these unique characters down to only one.

The first person I am considering writing a Profile on is Albert Einstein. He was an amazingly smart man who did so much for the world of science. I am considering him as an option because I am a Biology/Pre-Med major, and i believe that it is important to understand where the information I'm learning came from. Also, profiling him would help me get in the mind of someone who has some of the same goals and it would help me better understand the future ahead of me.

The second person I am considering Profiling is George W. Bush. I feel that he was a very important person and that profiling him would be very interesting form a political side. My family and I are Republicans and we all supported George W. Bush so I would be interested in getting to understand his presidency better and all the controversy that went along with it. People made him out to be such a horrible President but I never believed this and I would like to dig up some of these facts.

Darwin is also someone that I consider profiling. He also contributed countless amounts of information to science including things like survival of the fittest, genotypes and phenotypes. Seeing as my major is Biology he has everything to do with it. I believe it would be very interesting and helpful for me to better understand him and how he effected the way we use science today.

Atul Gawande is also someone I consider profiling because of his immense knowledge on medicine. He conducts multiple research that has to do with the medical fields, and this is interesting to me because I am currently working in a research lab for Kent. He also published a book that I am very interested in reading and i believe that profiling him could give me some very useful information.

Charles Horac Mayo is a very famous doctor who started the first and largest non profile medical clinic. He and his brother worked together to make sure that everyone could receive proper medical treatment.

Christiaan Barnard was a doctor who did research on animals for heart and kidney transplants. He was the first doctor to ever perform these two amazing surgeries on humans. Without his research we would not be where we are today with these two very important transplants.

Fredrick Banting worked to discover the treatment of diabetes. This work hugely impacted the world seeing as today the rise of diabetes is constantly inclining. With every generation more and more people are expected to have diabetes younger and younger. For this reason his work on finding insulin was astronomical.

Orvan Hess was a very important doctor in medical history. He and another doctor were the first to treat patients with penicillin. He also created a fetal heart monitor to help monitor pregnant woman. His basic design is the one still used today on woman.

Josheph Lister was a doctor who studied infections. He worked for years to discovering the answers to why infections spread and how to treat infections. His pioneer work has led to hospitals and doctors today using the techniques for sterilizing that they do.

Constructive Writing

Like most people grammar, spelling & word choice are not my forte; But unlike most people when I say this I'm 100% Serious! The last time i had a spelling test I got 5 out of 50... my family still makes fun of me for my lack of spelling abilities. If It was not for spell check my papers would all definitely be instant Failures. Along with my lack of spelling I have bad judgment when it comes to word choice. I always try to spice up my papers and put in "big girl words" but it does not always work out in my favor. I also need some guidance when it comes to transitioning paragraphs and idea. I have a lot of good ideas within my papers but sometimes they come out like word vomit. I guess this lack of organization has spread from my bed room to my papers.
